Wohngeld for Students & Trainees in Dortmund

Students and trainees generally do not receive Wohngeld – but there are important exceptions. Here we explain when the entitlement exists anyway.

Do students receive Wohngeld?

Anyone who receives BAföG or is eligible for funding in principle has no entitlement to Wohngeld. Students without BAföG eligibility – for example after exceeding the age limit or in a second degree – can, however, receive Wohngeld.

BAföG excludes Wohngeld

What matters is eligibility in principle: even those who have not applied for or do not receive BAföG do not get Wohngeld as long as an entitlement exists in principle.

When students receive Wohngeld anyway

  • The BAföG age limit has been exceeded.
  • A change of subject or degree programme excludes BAföG.
  • Second degree, part-time studies or distance learning without BAföG funding.

Trainees

Similar rules apply to trainees: those receiving vocational training allowance (BAB) do not get Wohngeld. Without BAB entitlement – for example in school-based training or with high parental income – Wohngeld can be an option.

Frequently Asked Questions

I do not receive BAföG – am I entitled to Wohngeld?

It depends on the reason: if there is no BAföG entitlement in principle (e.g. due to the age limit or a second degree), Wohngeld is possible. The application service clarifies your case.

Does my parents' income count?

The Wohngeld calculation counts the income of the household members. If you do not live in your parents' household, their income is not included – but it can play a role in the BAföG question.
