Calculating Wohngeld: How the Formula Works
Wohngeld follows a fixed formula logic: rent, income, household size and rent level come together. We explain the principle step by step.
Put simply: Wohngeld closes the gap between what your household can afford for rent after deducting income, and the recognisable rent (capped by rent level 3 and the maximum amount). The Wohngeldstelle determines the monthly subsidy from this.
The calculation in four steps
- Determine recognisable rent: your rent – limited by the maximum amount for rent level 3 and your household size.
- Adjust income: taxes, social security and allowances are deducted from household income.
- Determine affordable rent share: how much rent your household can manage on its own.
- Close the gap: the difference between recognisable rent and affordable share yields the Wohngeld.
An example of the principle
Example: For a two-person household in Dortmund, the maximum rent amount (rent level 3) is 551 € per month. If this household pays rent of that amount and its income is just below the relevant limit, Wohngeld covers part of it – the lower the income, the larger the share. The exact Wohngeld amount is determined by the Wohngeldstelle using the current table values.
Who calculates the exact amount?
The binding calculation is done by the Wohngeldstelle of the City of Dortmund. In advance, the application service gives you a reliable estimate.
Frequently Asked Questions
