Who Is Eligible for Wohngeld in Dortmund?

In principle, any low-income household can apply for Wohngeld — regardless of occupation or social situation. However, there are important exceptions and special regulations for certain groups.

Employees

Employees with low income regularly have an entitlement to Wohngeld. The decisive factor is the total income of all household members. Minijobbers and part-time employees can also receive Wohngeld.

Pensioners and Retirees

Pensioners can receive Wohngeld provided they do not receive basic income support in old age. Wohngeld is an important supplement, especially for low pensions. The pension counts as income.

Students and Trainees

Students are generally not entitled to Wohngeld if they receive BAföG or are eligible for BAföG in principle. Exceptions apply if they live with a child or partner, have taken a leave semester, or are over 30 years old.

Families and Single Parents

Families with children and single parents are among the most frequent Wohngeld recipients. Child benefit does not count as income. The more household members, the higher the potential Wohngeld.

Self-Employed

Self-employed individuals can also apply for Wohngeld. The decisive factor is the profit, not the turnover. The income from the last calendar year is used as the basis.

People with Disabilities

With a degree of disability (GdB) of at least 100 or with care level 3 and higher, an additional allowance of €1,800 per year applies. This is deducted from income, thereby increasing the Wohngeld entitlement.
