The approval period is the period for which you are granted Wohngeld. This is usually 12 months. After that, you must submit a new application to continue receiving Wohngeld.

Duration of the Approval Period

The Wohngeld approval period is usually 12 months. In special cases — for example if your income is expected to change soon — the period may be shorter (but at least 1 month). The exact period is specified in the Wohngeld notification.

Renewing Wohngeld

Wohngeld is not automatically renewed. Before the approval period expires, you must submit a renewal application. Allow about 2 months before expiry to avoid a payment gap.

Changes During the Approval Period

During the ongoing approval period, you are obliged to notify the Wohngeld office of significant changes. These include: income changes of more than 15%, changes in household members, moving within Dortmund, or cessation of rent payments. Failure to notify may result in reclaims.
